The Renewable Energy Market:
The success of renewable energy sources and its rapid up-take has been attributed to three factors (1)concern over remaining fossil fuel reserves, import dependence and security of supply, (2)concern about environmental pollution, and (3) government support and financial incentives. While the first two of these factors are fundamental drivers, without financial incentives which are currently offered by nearly 70 governments, renewable energy would not have taken off because of it high costs.
ABS has already established a successful series of 7 reports, each covering one renewable energy source and technology (hydro, wind, solar PV, solar thermal, biomass, geothermal, ocean), which provide a wealth of information and statistical detail about each segment. These energy sources are in widely varying phases of development. Some are still to be commercialised, like ocean energy conversion, others are now well established, such as hydro, wind and direct use of solar thermal heat. As these technologies progress through their cycle of development they are marked by successes and reverses, some unexpected, and ABS identifies these. These reports are continuing and expanding to embrace new developments.
The new, complementary series of Renewables Reports has a different focus. Instead of concentrating on individual technologies, it cuts across all the technologies and identifies important issues affecting some or all of the technologies and investigates these. Questions have arisen out of experience and were not fully understood at the start of the emergence of Renewables. If this sounds academic it is not. The reports are full of facts which planners need to confront and be aware of. ABS is a strong supporter of Renewable Energy, but we are convinced that it will be most successful if it is addressed honestly, warts and all. The Renewables sector has been victim and still is of overclaims and misinformation. This is partly due to enthusiasm, but let it be said, also to the financial benefits from feed-in tariffs and RPS support schemes
