ABS has built up a database of information about the electricity supply industry in every country over the last 13 years including key ESI personnel. This ESI personnel information is constantly updated and reflects the changes in the electrical supply industry. In the early years this ESI information reflected a traditionally integrated electrical supply industry, much of it state-owned. ABS classified the electrical utilities as electricity generators, transmission companies or distributors. In many countries there were vertically integrated electrical utilities companies performing all three functions, often with only one electrical supply company serving an entire nation.
In 2005, the ESI is structured as a business rather than a public service supplier, with four separate functions; electricity generation, transmission, distribution, supply, the last consisting of the marketing and sales of energy and the ESI Personnel Database reflects these changes to the ESI.
